New to judo? What to expect in your first session

20 August 2026

A coach greeting a newcomer at the door of the dojo

If you have never done judo before, the first session can feel like a big step. In practice it is a straightforward evening, and nobody expects you to know anything.

You will be met at the door, shown where to change, and introduced to a coach. We can lend you a judo suit, so there is nothing to buy in advance. Everyone trains barefoot on padded mats.

The session starts with a warm-up, then breakfalls: learning to land safely is the first thing we teach, and it comes before any throwing. You will be paired with someone of a similar size and experience, and a coach stays with the beginners throughout.

Your first session is free. If you enjoy it and want to continue, a coach will talk you through membership and the British Judo Association licence.
