A first judo lesson in progress at Guernsey Judo Club
  1. Borrow a Judo kit from us

No kit? No problem. Borrow a clean judogi (judo suit) for your first few weeks, just turn up in a t-shirt and leggings or a tracksuit.

  2. BJA licence after 4 weeks

After your first four weeks you'll need a British Judo Association licence. It covers your insurance and lets you grade and compete.

  3. Buy a Judo Kit from the club

Ready to commit? You can buy your own judogi directly from the club in every size, just ask any coach.

Our mat, our culture

Mat conduct & safety

A few simple principles keep Guernsey Judo a respectful, safe and supportive place, a reassurance for families and a promise we all make to each other.

Respect coaches & partners

We bow on and off the mat and treat every partner with care. Judo means 'the gentle way'.

Listen and stop on command

When a coach calls matte (stop), everyone stops. It keeps the whole mat safe.

Controlled technique

Throws and holds are practised with control. There is no place for reckless force.

Clean kit, trimmed nails

A clean judogi, short nails, and bare clean feet keep the mat hygienic for all.

Questions

Everything you need to know before your first session.

Get in touch
  1. Judo is a contact sport, but safety is our priority. We teach controlled technique from day one and group children by size and ability to keep everyone safe.

  2. Keep your judogi clean and worn properly. Fingernails and toenails must be trimmed short.

  3. Membership is charged per term. You’ll also need a British Judo Association licence, which covers insurance and affiliation. See our pricing page for full details.

  4. New members can train for four weeks before committing to a full term. It gives you time to see if judo is right for you and get a feel for the club.

  5. Bring a water bottle and a towel. Judo is practised barefoot on the mat, so no shoes are needed. We provide all the kit you need to get started.

  6. New junior beginners can only join in the first two weeks of a term. Adult beginners are welcome at any point in the term.
